This Is Us fans can all agree: Jack Pearson is perfection in human form. Therefore, by default, so is the actor who plays his character: Milo Ventimiglia.
That's why it's soto hear that in the beginning of his acting career, Ventimiglia faced regular criticism about the way he looked.
"People told me: 'Could you stop doing that thing with your mouth where your lip is going down?'" the actor recalled . "And I’d be like: ‘Hey, I was born that way."
It turns out that Ventimiglia's iconic, swoon-worthy grin is the result of dead nerves on one side of his face. He says that in auditions, he was always asked to correct his "crooked mouth"—meaning the fact that one side of his bottom lip didn't move.
"When I was young, I used to really talk out of the side of my face — it was that pronounced," “I saw a quick interview when I was a kid on the local news channel...and I remember saying to my mom: 'Mom, what’s going on? What's wrong? That’s how I talk? That’s what I look like when I talk?'"
He couldn't believe it. From that point forward, the young actor was determined to fix his facial imperfection. He would sit in front of a mirror and read a book to himself to try to figure out a way to speak without the slant looking so pronounced.
These days, the quirk only pops out occasionally, like if Ventimiglia is "running and yelling in a scene." Regardless, the actor seems to have accepted his charming "flaw" (if you would even call it that!).
"It’s who I am, you know? I’ve got a crooked mouth.”
