The F/V Wizard is mourning the loss of one of their own.

The ship featured on Deadliest Catch is captained by Keith Colburn, and the no-frills seaman took to Twitter recently to share some sad personal news. Michael “Bear” Rogers, a former deck boss on the Wizard, passed away peacefully at age 66, according to his obituary.

“On July 16th, Michael 'Bear' Rogers, father, son, husband, brother and friend passed from this world into the next,” Keith wrote. “Bear was the deck boss on the F/V Wizard when a green kid from Tahoe stepped on the Wizard’s deck for the first time.”

Keith continued with more kind words about Mike. “Bear was a towering, intimidating physical presence, but his kind heart, infectious smile, and his gift of storytelling made him the person everyone wanted to befriend. He was my mentor in the fishing industry and a dear friend in life.”

Keith even credits Mike with his success. After a “particularly tough trip” once, Mike told the previous Wizard captain to, “Keep that kid-fire the rest.”

“My fishing career could have ended that day if not for Bear. Smooth sailing my crusty old friend! You taught me more than fishing. You shared your experience and wisdom, and you reminded me, ‘Without family are you truly living?’” he said.

Keith also sent his condolences to Mike’s wife of 34 years, Cherie, and his kids, Maria and Amanda. Mike reportedly worked in the crab fishing industry for 18 years, most notably aboard the Wizard.

Our thoughts go out to Mike's family and the Wizard crew during this time.
